LATIN LAWYER RECOGNIZES BENITES, VARGAS & UGAZ’S LEADERSHIP IN CRIMINAL LAW, LITIGATION, ADMINISTRATIVE AND LABOR LAW.

Renowned international publication highlights the firm’s consolidation in the four key areas. It also praises its actions in Pro Bono matters.

The 2017 edition of the prestigious legal guide Latin Lawyer 250, which evaluates the leading law firms in Latin America, highlights the leadership of the Peruvian firm Benites, Vargas & Ugaz in the legal practices of criminal law, litigation, administrative and labor law, relevant areas in the Peruvian legal market.

The Legal Guide, backed by 19 years of intense research by its editorial team, recognizes in the case of criminal law the work performed by José Ugaz Sánchez Moreno, who also serves as Chair of Transparency International and, previously, as a member of the Integrity Office of the World Bank. “Ugaz is well-known in anti-corruption issues and human rights advocacy. He investigated the former intelligence chief, Vladimiro Montesinos”, it points out.

The publication highlights the firm’s leadership in the so-called “white-collar crime” and “compliance” practice, underlining the key role performed not only by Ugaz, but by lawyers Luis Vargas Valdivia and Héctor Gadea. “It is a highly respected team, considered an authority in the field of white-collar crime. Consequently, it is the first choice for many companies seeking to raise awareness of the issue among their staff,” the publication states.

On litigation matters, Latin Lawyer stresses that this is a flagship practice at the law firm, which enjoys enviable expertise in civil, constitutional, regulatory, and corporate proceedings. The key partners in this practice are Víctor García Toma, under the leadership of José Ugaz.

Another practice highlighted in the publication is administrative law. The Legal Guide especially mentions partners Víctor García Toma and Daniel Figallo, the latter having rejoined the firm after his recent performance as Minister of Justice. “This practice includes advising companies in their procedures related to infrastructure projects, the drafting of rules for public offerings, among others,” it points out.

ADVANCES IN LABOR LAW

Another aspect highlighted by the publication is the area of labor law, which has experienced strong growth in the last decade. “The labor law practice is currently another of the firm’s strengths, which partly explains the firm’s recent growth,” the publication notes.

It mentions the work performed by Jorge Luis Acevedo, who is praised by his clients for his “practical sense” and the personalized approach with which he provides his services. It highlights that the firm has achieved recent favorable pronouncements from the highest courts in matters of dismissal and collective bargaining.

Finally, the publication evidences the firm’s market recognition for its (free) “Pro Bono” cases, which tend to be high-profile and very sensitive cases. It mentions the recent cases of support to people who suffered sexual abuse in the Sodalitium Christianae Vitae case, a Catholic order. And, in 2016, the firm also helped the family of Alianza football team supporter Walter Oyarce, which has obtained favorable prison sentences of 25 years for the murderers.
